Box in precious wood marquetry, rosewood and ebony, framed in brass, for a pocket watch, called a "watch holder". This work is stamped with the famous official table maker of the Emperor Napoleon 3: TAHAN in Paris. The lid with precious wood inlay and the front with pressure lock. "Unique house for its kind of manufacture and which knew how to impose itself, as a result of the good taste of its compositions. At Tahan, we never look at the price: the important thing is that the name Tahan appears on the object” (Pierre Giffard, Les Fourchambault, 1878). "Prince of small cabinetmaking", Tahan marked his time by the care given to each of his pieces, both works of art and utility. Generally small or medium in size, this furniture invaded bourgeois interiors, so much so that according to the Handbook of Elegant Economy (1859), “they alone make up the entire physiognomy of the time”. It was in Belgium in Spa, a small spa town in the Ardennes, that Pierre Lambert Tahan, table maker by profession, started this business with a formidable destiny. He left Spa for Paris in 1804, and set up his “boxes and necessary” factory in the Temple district. His son Jean Pierre Alexandre (1813-1892) was born in Paris, and helped him from 1837, to take over the total management of the company in 1844, his father then ceasing all activity. Jean Pierre Alexandre will then use his ingenuity to begin his great pioneering work. First of all, it separates the workshop on rue de Quincampoix from the store on rue basse du rempart. He develops the production of boxes but also produces larger pieces of furniture, happiness of the day, desks, work tables. From 1845, he also began to advertise in newspapers, a practice still little used. "Supplier to the King and Princes", he won a silver medal in 1849 at the Exhibition of Industrial Products, and was then called "the prince of small cabinetmaking". In 1855, he bore the title of "Supplier to the Emperor" at the Universal Exhibition where he exhibited an extraordinary sculpted aviary. The Court in fact placed a large number of orders with him, including rosewood planters, coffee tables for the Tuileries Palace, and a mahogany and gilt bronze shelf for Napoleon III's desk. His store moved to 34 rue de la Paix (1849 -1866), then 11 Boulevard des Italiens (1866-1878). In 1861, Tahan was thus designated as "one of those manufacturers who are ahead of fashion and set the tone instead of submitting". (The Chronicle of Arts and Curiosity). Indeed, he quickly collaborated with Julien-Nicolas Rivart to encrust his furniture with porcelain flowers, which would become part of his privileged vocabulary. It is then a new technique, which places it at the forefront of modernity. Gold medalist at the Universal Exhibition of 1867, Tahan employed at the end of the Second Empire more than two hundred employees in several workshops. Tahan was, like Rivart, a spirit enthusiastic about the inventions of the second half of the 19th century, and himself filed a patent for the cylinder desk, as well as another for briefcases with translucent fronts in 1858. Maison Tahan declines after the fall of the Empire that had supported it so much. Thus, in 1882, the factory ceased production and the store closed its doors.
