About the Item

This gorgeous ceramic lidded rectangular box was made by Rookwood Pottery of Cincinnati, Ohio, and decorated by renowned artist, Sara Sax. Rookwood has long been recognized as one of the premier producers of fine art pottery in the world. Founded in 1880, Rookwood's artisans experimented with new techniques and glazes, developing their own distinctive style and creating pieces that are still highly sought after by collectors today. Sax joined the decorating staff at Rookwood Pottery in 1896 and worked there until 1931. Considered one of Rookwood's most important artists, she was instrumental in mastering many of the company's famous glaze lines. This circa 1922 ceramic box is rectangular in shape. The lid features a profusion of blossoms framed by a geometric border. The sides of the lid also have bas relief decoration consisting of a fish scale, like pattern. The central floral grouping is hand decorated in muted hues of rose, purple, blue, teal with green foliage, a color scheme echoed in each of the four corners and on the borders of the piece. The inside of the lid bears a deep royal blue glaze that complements the ecru exterior of the box. The base of the box has thick walls with a geometric motif and coloration on the exterior which echoes that found on the lid. The inside is finished in the same rich blue glaze found on the interior of the lid. The box and lid are in very good antique condition with no cracks or repairs. That said, it should be noted that there are a few slight anomalies in the glaze including pinpricks and areas of minor discoloration, all of which are commonly found in handmade pottery. There is negligible display related wear to the base as well as a few minor chips to the inside rim of the lid. None of these issues detract from the appearance or function of the piece and as seen in the accompanying photographs, it displays beautifully. The box stands 2.375" tall and measures 6.5" x 3.75" at the base. The interior opening is 5.5" x 2.875", and has a depth of 1 6/8". The glazed foot bears Rookwood's impressed "RP" logo along with their characteristic 14 flame mark and the Roman numeral "XXII", dating the box to 1922. It also has the incised code "2643" referencing the mold number of the pieces, and Sara Sax's cipher. The box and lid have a combined weight of 2lbs 1oz. This highly collectible Sara Sax art pottery box would be a fantastic addition to an existing collection of artist signed Rookwood pieces, or works well as a classic decorative accent on a table or mantelpiece. Sure to add an elegant touch to your decor.
