About the Item

Chinese erotic ivory snuff bottle, most likely realized during the late !ing Dinasty (late 19th Century). Both main faces are finely engraved with Shunga-style erotic scenes, showing couples in intimate poses set within outdoor or garden-like backgrounds. These are outlined in dark ink, as was common in 19th-century examples. Such snuff bottles were used to hold powdered tobacco (snuff), which was inhaled as a stimulant. Erotic decoration was a discreet and private indulgence for the owner, often kept in a pocket or sleeve. Very good condition.
