About the Item

This antique snuff or tobacco box is hallmarked by an unknown maker, and originates from England and dates to 1820 and done in the period Georgian style. The box is engraved in script on the top panel and was presented to Sgt. Major Hains in 1853 in apprreciation of the seven years of service with this unit. The box is composed of sterling silver and is ornately decorated with repouse and chased flowers. The box is clearly hallmarked "JW" with the date cypher for 1820 and the lion passant. The box is in very good period condition and the hinged lid functions as intended.
