A fine antique pictorial enamel and underbelly-cut tortoiseshell singing bird box,
Circa 1910,

Soft streaks of light throughout this fabulous case...
When wound and start/stop slide moved to the right, the bird emerges through the pierced and tooled gilt grille, moving bone beak, wings and body from side-to-side to continuous synchronized birdsong.
With the bird displaying good chevron banded feathered plumage in dark blue, turquoise and teal green, beautifully complimented by iridescent flashes of gold and green, wide plain polished tortoiseshell border, lid interior with painted enamel study of roses and daisies with trailing flowers on lagoon blue ground.
Lid top with exceptional painted study depictingﾠLakeﾠLémanﾠwithﾠaﾠviewﾠofﾠGeneva
andﾠMontﾠBlanc in the background, in pure underbelly-cut tortoiseshell case of the highest standard with superb caramel and dark yellow tones to all sides, top and underside.
Points of interest -
If looking at a standard underbelly-cut case, there are some areas such as corners where the panel was not big enough to use, so they spliced in more cuts to make it work. In most cases, a lighter or darker dye was used to highlight the intensity on the inside - much the same as butchers use pink light bulbs to make the meat look redder.
Here, not one splice or dye is present . This tortoiseshell panel would have been very large and most probably a pretty expensive material to acquire.
