About the Item
East Meets West: Rare Chinese Export "European Subject" Porcelain Snuff Box
Circa 1750–1760
A superb mid-18th century Chinese Export porcelain snuff box, finely painted in famille rose and puce enamels, featuring rare "European Subject" decoration. The rectangular box, after a European silver form, features a slightly domed cover and is fitted with its contemporary chased gilt-metal (ormolu) mounts and hinge.
The exterior walls are painted with a continuous frieze of European figures—gentlemen in 18th-century frock coats—conversing in a continuous river landscape. The scenery blends Western perspective with Chinese architectural elements (pagodas alongside spires), a charming characteristic of the period.
The lid centers on a large, intricate gilt monogram (possibly "MW" or "MA") framed by a vibrant Rococo cartouche of blue and yellow scrolling foliage. The base and the interior of the lid are delicately painted with Deutsche Blumen (German Flowers) in puce enamel—a direct stylistic homage to the Meissen porcelain that inspired this piece.
Provenance:
Collection of Marvin Davison, New York, NY;
Cohen
Cohen, London (bearing the dealer's paper label to the interior).
Condition: Good.
Measurements:
Width: 3 1/8 inches (7.94 cm) x Depth: 2 1/2 inches (6.35cm) x Height: 1 1/2 inches (3.81cm).
Historical Context:
Created during the Qianlong period (1736–1795), this box illustrates the height of the "Private Trade." While bulk porcelain (plates/bowls) filled the ships' holds, small, high-value items like snuff boxes were commissioned privately by European merchants and captains.
The decoration is significant: Chinese artists were copying European prints (often by artists like Watteau) and European porcelain styles (specifically Meissen) to suit Western tastes. The use of "European Subject" figures—Westerners depicted by Chinese hands—makes this piece significantly rarer and more valuable than standard floral wares.
