An exquisite Chinese Hand Carved Peking Glass Snuff Bottle. Hand painted on the reverse with a dragon chasing the pearl design. This beautiful Chinese snuff bottle is hand made of the finest green Peking glass in shades of a rich forest green with accents of more yellow grass green. The classic gourd form of this snuff bottle accentuates the design and the Peking glass is carved through to reveal "windows" that showcase two Chinese dragons, one blue spouting fire and the other golden-orange chasing a pearl, both dragons flying through the clouds. Hand carved, hand painted and signed with an inscription.
Peking glass is a centuries-old Chinese decorative art form involving layered colored glass that is carved to reveal a raised, multi-colored design. The process begins by dipping a blown-glass object into molten colored glass multiple times to create distinct layers. Artists then meticulously carve away the outermost layers to expose the colors underneath, forming intricate patterns of flowers, animals, and landscapes. This technique, which originated in the Qing Dynasty, was at its peak under the Qianlong Emperor and was used for items like snuff bottles, vases, and jars.
