About the Item

This rare -- perhaps unique -- enameled cigarette case or compact features a cartouche with a kneeling Egyptian figure surrounded by symbols and hieroglyphics on its lid, all in tones of royal blue, mint green, orange-red and spring green. The back of the case is engraved in a geometric design, and the interior is finished with a gold wash. The marks suggest that the silver was smithed in Egypt and the enamel was added in Germany: the inside edge is marked "Sterling" and "Germany," and the clasp features hallmarks indicating an assay office and purity (probably .900 silver), a 'cat' symbol for Egyptian silver, and the letter 'C' for 1927-28. By the early 20th century, Egypt had developed a reputation for high quality silver smiths, and fine artisan shops in Cairo would cater to wealthy tourists and antiquity hunters.
