About the Item
A fine and rare 19th century sterling silver snuff box made specifically for the Great Exhibition of 1851, held at the Crystal Palace in London.
The lid shows a finely detailed engraved image of the Crystal Palace surrounded by a border of hand chased foliate motifs, opening on precisely made barrel hinges to reveal a gilded interior bearing Birmingham hallmarks, date mark for 1850 and makers marks for Foxall
Company.
The reverse decorated with hand chased foliate motifs and centered by a blank cartouche against engine turned geometric designs. Weight, 39 grams.
In addition to its scarcity as well as it historical
cultural significance, it is worth mentioning that the silversmithing firm of Foxall
Company manufactured wares for a very brief period of time, from 1850-1853.
This truly rare example would be cherished by any serious collector of silver, particularly a collector of silver boxes.
