About the Item

A hammered copper Art Deco–era vide-poche with rich patina, crafted in the Dutch Arts and Crafts Amsterdam School tradition and accented with a carnelian detail. This Amsterdam School hammered small copper box was made during the Art Deco era and reflects the Dutch Arts and Crafts movement’s emphasis on expressive surface texture and honest materials. The warm copper exterior is shaped into a clean, rectangular form with a hinged lid, its surface finished with hand-hammered detailing that gives it a rich, tactile patina. At the center of the lid, a polished carnelian cabochon provides a jewel-like accent. The interplay between the deep red stone and the patinated copper is characteristic of Amsterdam School metalwork, which often paired simple geometric forms with carefully considered decorative elements. Originally designed as a tobacco box, its compact proportions and durable construction make it equally suited today as a vide-poche, desk accessory, or keepsake container. The interior retains the hammered texture, reinforcing the piece’s handcrafted quality and early 20th-century character. Both functional and visually understated, this copper box stands as an appealing example of Amsterdam School design on an intimate scale.
