About the Item
Nineteenth century Chinese chinoiserie black lacquer tea caddy richly decorated in gold. The exterior shows delicate garden scenes with birds, flowers, and foliage painted with fine detail. The caddy rests on carved claw feet with brass fittings, giving it an elegant presence.
The interior is fitted with Chinese pewter and has two compartments, each with two lids. The second set of lids has ivory knobs. The pewter is embossed with flowers and butterflies and remains in good condition for its age. The interior depth is two inches.
This tea caddy was made for the English market and reflects the high level of craftsmanship associated with nineteenth century export lacquer. It does not retain its key.
A beautifully preserved example with strong decoration and very good condition for its age.
