About the Item

French Modernist St. Clement Ceramic Sapho Creation Candelabra's. A pair of French Modernist Ceramic Candelabras Sapho Creation St. Clement France. Organic form having three arms each with bronzed glaze. Nicely refined bold form in very good condition. St. Clement, France, 1960s. The factories of Saint-Clement, were established in 1758 by Jacques Chambrette. The factories received recognition becoming the Royal Supplier for Marie-Antoinette's Trianon. St. Clement Pottery has seen many era's and styles through the centuries. In the 18th century Saint-Clément produced domestic objects of ordinary earthenware, luxurious objects and decorative objects of fine earthenware (so-called "terre de pipe"). Between the first quarter of the 19th century and 1892 both current utensils of ordinary earthenware and fine earthenware are produced and decorative objects. Interestingly, between 1864-1876, the famous French glassmaker--Emile Galle and his father produced their wares in the workshop at St. Clement. In the second half of the 19th century the factory reproduced Louis XIV objects, among them objects with very unnatural forms, where they attempted to imitate the multicolored decorations of Strasbourg faience. After 1920 the production consisted of dinnerware of fine earthenware (often with old decorations) and decorative objects (animals) in craquelé earthenware (around 1925, 1930). The production of barbotine is continued until 1930. Nowadays, Saint-Clément is the only earthenware factory still active in France and employs 130 people. It produces many of the classic majolica pieces associated with the Saint-Clément brand plus newer designs that have evolved more recently.
