About the Item

Pair of silver-plated four-light candelabra, likely French or Russian Empire style from the 19th Century, exhibiting characteristics associated with the Neoclassical period. The top removable to transform each in a candlestick. Each raised on a circular, spreading base decorated with a band of stylized leaves and egg-and-dart or bead-and-dart borders, above fluted, tapering stems in Corinthian column style, adorned with acanthus leaves and other foliage motifs and ending in a removeable central light and three scrolling arms attached to the stem by the head of an eagle. The intricate chasing and detailed casting demonstrate a high level of artisanal skill typical of leading silversmiths and bronze workers of the era. Pieces in this style were highly fashionable in the late 18th and 19th centuries, commissioned by royal courts and wealthy clientele across Europe, including Russia and Portugal. The combination of classical architectural form (the column stem) and organic decorative motifs (acanthus leaves, foliage) creates a balanced and elegant design that remains highly sought after for its timeless appeal. The modular design, allowing the removal of the branch section to allow their use as single-light candlesticks, adds to their functionality and value.
