About the Item

This elegant pair of Japanese Buddhist temple candle holders (shokudai) is crafted from carved wood with gilt decoration and fitted with brass hardware. Such candle stands were traditionally used in temple interiors, where their height and radiant surfaces enhanced the ceremonial atmosphere and reflected candlelight during rituals. The elongated proportions and restrained ornamentation reflect the aesthetic language of Japanese Buddhist furnishings, combining dignity with quiet refinement. The gilt surfaces retain a warm, aged patina, while the brass elements provide subtle contrast and structural detail. The pair remains in fine overall condition, showing minor abrasions and small areas of lacquer loss consistent with age and ritual use. Dimensions: Height: 66 cm; Base diameter: 13 cm (Height: 26 in; Base diameter: 5 in) Weight: Approx. 1 kg (2.2 lb) each Condition: Fine condition with minor abrasions and lacquer losses.
