About the Item

A unique and spectacular pair of large antique French Louis XVI gilt bronze and marble candelabras. These candelabras are designed in monumental scale, each rising from a square gilt bronze plinth base with chased linear patterning. The main body is constructed from richly colored marble of deep red and brown tones, polished to a smooth finish and shaped into an elongated urn form with a swelling midsection tapering to a narrower foot. Applied gilt bronze mounts encircle the body, including a broad band cast with playful putti in relief, as well as acanthus leaf decoration at the lower section. From the sides emerge figural mounts in the form of reclining female nudes, their arms extended to hold garlands and wreaths that connect across the marble surface. Additional gilt bronze masks and scrollwork adorn the lower portion, creating a layered composition of mounts around the urn. From the marble base rises a large gilt bronze candelabrum section, cast with a central stem from which multiple scrolling candle branches extend. Each branch terminates in a fluted candle cup and drip pan, with details of acanthus foliage and reeding throughout the design. The central stem is decorated with leaf motifs that rise upward to support the branching arms, surmounted by a larger central candleholder at the apex. Altogether, each candelabrum provides space for multiple lights, the arrangement radiating outward in balanced symmetry. The arms and stem are enriched with textured surfaces, emphasizing botanical patterns consistent with the Louis XVI style. These candelabras reflect the French Louis XVI period’s use of neoclassical forms, combined with elaborate gilt bronze ornament and figural mounts. The pairing of marble with extensive fire-gilt bronze mounts was a favored technique of Parisian workshops, known for combining rich natural stones with highly worked metal. The figural nymph mounts, the detailed putti frieze, and the botanical candelabrum section all align with the decorative vocabulary employed in late 18th-century France, when luxury objects incorporated both classical motifs and elaborate gilded ornament. This pair exemplifies the technical skill of bronze casting and marble selection used by leading French ateliers of the Louis XVI era.
