A spectacular pair of large antique French Louis XVI style gilt bronze figural candelabras. The candelabras are composed of gilt bronze and designed in the Louis XVI style, each formed as a classically draped female figure standing on a cylindrical fluted column. The figures are depicted barefoot, with hair arranged in a gathered style, each holding an upward-curving cornucopia. From the cornucopia emerges a branching arrangement of candle arms fashioned as flowering stems, each with individual blooms and foliage, supporting candle sockets shaped as open blossoms. The floral composition includes various species such as lilies and roses, rendered in detailed, three-dimensional form, with petals, stamens, and leaves individually modeled. The bases are circular with a gadrooned and laurel leaf frieze, set atop octagonal white marble plinths edged with a beaded gilt bronze border.
The pair is French in origin, executed in gilt bronze with casting and chasing techniques characteristic of high-quality decorative lighting of the period. The design reflects the neoclassical revival of the Louis XVI style, with emphasis on classical drapery, balanced proportions, and botanical ornament.
