About the Item
This painted wooden candelabrum, known as the “Essungastaken,” was designed by Swedish maker John Svensson and produced in Sweden during the mid-20th century. Executed in the tradition of Scandinavian folk art, the piece reflects the allmogestil (vernacular craft tradition), characterized by turned wooden elements, rhythmic proportions, and a vivid yet balanced polychrome palette.
The candelabrum features seven candle arms arranged in a sculptural, symmetrical composition. Each element is individually turned and assembled, creating a lively interplay between form, color, and movement. The hand-painted surface shows a carefully considered use of traditional pigments, lending warmth and depth while maintaining a graphic clarity that translates well into contemporary interiors.
While rooted in Swedish folk tradition, the object carries a distinctly modern presence, functioning equally as a decorative sculptural piece and a functional candleholder. It works well as a centerpiece on a dining table, sideboard, or console, offering both visual impact and cultural context.
A strong example of mid-century Scandinavian decorative arts, combining craftsmanship, color, and historical continuity.
