About the Item
This 19th century brass hanging pendant sanctuary lamp is from a Spanish collection, but it shares characteristics with French sanctuary lamps of the same period. The overall shape is reminiscent of the suspended oil lamps of ancient times, and three angels, or cherubim, with crossed wings and somber expressions are found at the points where the chains meet the lower bowl. The lamp shows some normal wear with minor dents and scratches, it is complete with all parts present less the glass “globe” or candle holder, which would be supported by the circular metal ring at the center.
Standing and hanging lamps can be found in Jewish, Christian and Muslim houses of worship, and have varying symbolic purposes. This piece was very probably made for use in a Catholic church, where the sanctuary lamp hangs close to the main altar and is meant to burn constantly day and night as a symbol of God’s continuing presence. Traditionally, natural bee’s wax or pure olive oil must be burned as the source of light, signifying sacrifice, and the candle or oil flame should be inside a glass “globe” which is usually red in color to both distinguish it from the other votive lights within the church, and as a symbol of Christ’s Passion. If more than one sanctuary lamp is used, they must be odd in number (3, 5, 7...).
