About the Item
Monumental pair of late 1950s V-27 wought iron and blown glass Hurricane Lamps by John Vesey. In my 15+ years of interest in Vesey's work this is the first pair of his Hurricane Lamps to appear on the market. These lamps have a direct provenance from Brooke Astor's "Cove End" on Mt. Desert Island, Maine. This iconic, much published home was decorated by Parish Hadley, Brooke's neighbor Nancy Pierrepont and Mark Hampton. While I'm currently unsure who installed these lanterns at Cove End they do appear in Brooke's dining room flanking the hearth. The monumental scale of these lanterns is difficult to capture so I included a can of coffee as a scale in a few images. There is light surface rust to a few sections of each lantern bases which leads me to believe they were likely used on an exposed porch or outside at some time in their life at Cove End.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. Light surface rust and paint chips to a few sections of lantern bases. The rust is not active. Scattered paint loss to aluminum caps and candle cups. Slight, wax residue on candle cups. No chipping or cracks to handblown shades. Structurally intact.
