About the Item

A rare pair of 19th-century Sicilian Baroque Revival torcheres, masterfully hand-carved from solid wood and finished with a time-worn silvered surface. These statuesque candle stands exemplify the theatrical grandeur of the Italian Baroque aesthetic, characterized by their bold, architectural silhouettes and dynamic, scrolling ornamentation. The design is anchored by a substantial triform base, where deeply carved volutes and acanthus leaf motifs swirl outward to form stable, scrolling feet. Rising from this foundation is a complex, baluster-form shaft composed of alternating knopped and tapering sections, each defined by distinct molded ridges and stylized vegetal carving. The silver finish, likely applied over a traditional bole ground, has aged to a beautiful, distressed patina, revealing glimpses of the raw timber and construction layers beneath, which adds authentic historic character. These pieces are in original antique condition and exhibit significant signs of their age and history. As shown in the detailed photos, there is visible surface wear, abrasion to the silvering, and natural separation at the joinery of the base scrolls, consistent with centuries of wood movement. These "imperfections" confirm their age and handmade origin. Originally intended to flank an altar or grand entryway in a Sicilian palazzo, they now serve as dramatic sculptural elements, perfect for holding pillar candles or being professionally wired as unique floor lamps.
