About the Item

This impressive pair of carved giltwood candleholders dates to the 18th century and was likely created in Southern Europe. Executed in richly detailed Baroque style, each piece features a finely sculpted baluster shaft with floral and foliate motifs, standing on a tri-lobed base supported by bun feet. The surfaces are finished in gold and silver leaf, exhibiting beautiful wear and patina consistent with age and devotional use. Each base is decorated with three polychrome putti heads (one of them has lost his wings), painted in soft pastel tones. However, their originality cannot be guaranteed—they may have been added or restored during a later conservation effort. The overall appearance suggests that the pair was likely restored in the 1970s, with some areas of overpainting and re-gilding visible, especially around the figures and base surfaces. The candleholders are fitted with original iron prickets for altar candles and present a striking decorative presence, ideal for use in classical or eclectic interiors. A beautiful ensemble with rich history, despite visible wear, paint losses, and restoration traces.
