About the Item
A rare and delightful antique pair Torquay art pottery mottoware candlesticks made by Aller Vale and dating from around 1890. The terracotta clay candlesticks are of tall cylindrical column form standing on a wide flat rounded base with a ridged rim and raised bowl shaped candle holder. Both are applied in relief with vines leaves to the body painted in green against a brown glazed ground with painted mottoware sayings around the base, one reading ‘Don’t light your candle at both ends’ and the other ‘Last in bed put out the light’. Both candlesticks have impressed ALLER VALE marks with incised numbers 195.
