Antique Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze Ormolu Gold Marble Candleholder Candlestick Continental Bronze, marble Late 19th Century Dimensions: H x W x D: 6.5cm x 9cm x 7cm This charming Louis XVI style candleholder dates to the late 19th century. The Louis XVI style emerged in France in the late 18th century, during the reign of King Louis XVI, as a reaction against the ornate excesses of the Rococo period. Influenced by classical antiquity and Enlightenment ideals, it emphasized symmetry, order, and clarity. These characteristics, such as straight lines, fluted forms, geometric balance, and refined decorative motifs, are clearly evident in this piece. The gilt bronze candleholder features an urn-like form with a gadrooned base and a spreading socle stand. The main body is adorned with a female mask flanked by laurel leaves. It rests on a square base of the same material, inset with white marble for added visual contrast. Each corner is embellished with turned finials, while two sides display pierced laurel-leaf decoration. In the late 19th century, small candlesticks were widely used both as sources of illumination and as decorative accents, particularly in middle-class homes and intimate social settings. Advances in metalworking and mass production made such objects more affordable, while their designs often reflected historic revival styles and a growing emphasis on refined domestic interiors. Showcasing the popular aesthetics of the 19th century, this fine candleholder would make a superb addition to any interior décor.
