About the Item

Impressive Baroque altar candlestick finely carved in wood and gilded with gold leaf. The piece stands on a tripod base with lion paw feet, supporting an elegant baluster stem adorned with fluted motifs and acanthus leaves, surmounted by a wide gadrooned drip pan. The gilding shows beautiful natural wear, revealing the traditional red bole and gesso preparation underneath — a clear sign of an authentic 18th-century technique. A small brass plaque fixed under the base reads: A. Estrella – Escultor – Porto – 85/89 Rua do Bom Jardim attesting to a restoration and re-gilding carried out in Porto by the Estrella workshop, active in religious sculpture during the late 19th century. Baroque late 17th to early 18th century influence, with strong Italian and Portuguese stylistic traits — typical of ecclesiastical furnishings from that period. Such pieces would originally have flanked church or chapel altars. Private European collection. Originally from Southern Europe (Italy or Portugal), later restored in Porto by A. Estrella, Sculptor (Rua do Bom Jardim), c.1880–1900.
