Burden and Flame is a sculptural ceramic candle holder by Chinese artist Darren Dai. The work intertwines mythology, ritual, and the quiet weight of devotion. A seated figure supports a rising pillar on its head, a form that becomes both burden and altar, culminating in a shallow platform designed to hold a flame. Along the vertical stem, organic textures and abstracted creatures cling and spiral, suggesting the tension between spiritual aspiration and earthly strain.
Built entirely by hand without molds, the sculpture carries the raw imprint of the artist’s touch. High firing strengthens the clay while preserving its natural irregularities. These surface variations express Darren Dai’s Taoist approach to material, allowing emotion and form to appear gradually through process and observation. Each piece is symbolic, functional, and wholly unique, offering a luminous presence within any interior.
