About the Item

A large, sculptural floor-standing candle holder, model Huskatt (House Cat), designed in the 1950s by Gunnar Ander for the Swedish manufacturer Ystad Metall. Crafted from wrought iron, the cat-shaped frame stands on four spherical wooden feet. Fitted with a large candle holder designed to accommodate a single pillar candle. Marked with “Made in Sweden” stamped into the steel. The Swedish metal company Ystad Metall was founded in the southern town of Ystad in 1919, initially producing decorative objects mainly crafted from copper and brass. In the 1920s, pewter grew in popularity, and a wide range of objects was introduced using this soft and easily worked material.Over the years, many renowned artists collaborated with the company, including Ivar Ålenius-Björk, Carl-Einar Borgström, and Gunnar Ander. The company’s most famous product is the Liljan candlestick, which was introduced at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.
