About the Item

Vintage sculptural candle holder features two triangular sconces with build-in drip pans, or bobeches, connected by the rounded base. The organic, flowing base juxtaposes the linear structure of the sconces with flaring drip pans, adding visual interest and striking contrast to the composition. The candle holder is in very good vintage condition with age-appropriate patina; it is marked with WMF Ikora mark with tower with one underline, that was in use from 1927 to 1950s, and GERMANY; stylised tower is derived from the emblem of Geislingen, a local landmark defensive tower. The unmistakenly Mid Century Modern design shows the influence of Bauhaus and international, in particular Scandinavian, Modernist style. The piece is somewhat reminiscent of the metal candleholders created decades later by Carl Christiansen in 1960s-1970s, and it would display beautifully with Danish or Scandinavian Modern decor of the period, as well as with Art Deco pieces. The elegant and decorative piece will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast and will complement various tablescapes and interior styles, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Eclectic, Scandinavian Modern, Japandi, Transitional, Grand Millennial, Glam, Maximalist, Collected, or Contemporary. Günter Kupetz (1925-2018) was a German industrial designer and university lecturer. Initially he studied architecture and sculpture, but in the early 1950s, influenced by Scandinavian design, he began developing everyday objects. From 1954 to 1961 he created multiple metal and glass designs for the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF), including the leaded glass whiskey set that Louis Armstrong called "the most beautiful in the world." He is considered one of WMF's most important designers; he participated in the 1957 Milan Triennial and the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels. Against the background of the changed social and economic conditions, he participated in the international dialogue around a contemporary industrial form in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1959, Kupetz was one of the founding members of the Association of German Industrial Designers (VDID). In 1971, he accepted a position at what is now the Kassel Art Academy at the University of Kassel, where he taught consumer goods design, establishing this subject together with Herbert Oestreich. In 1973 he was appointed to the Berlin University of the Arts , where he worked as a professor of product design until his retirement. His works can be found in the collection of the in museum collections worldwide, including Museum of Modern Art in New York.
