About the Item
This industrial clamp lamp is an authentic mid-20th-century American work light, originally produced for factory, workshop, and maintenance environments where durability, safety, and precise illumination were essential. When acquired over five years ago, the lamp was new old stock, having never been put into service, a rare circumstance for an object of this type and period. This provenance is reflected in the exceptional condition of its components, which retain crisp surfaces and well-preserved finishes.
At its core is a heavy-duty General Electric porcelain socket, clearly stamped GENERAL ELECTRIC, paired with a nickel-plated steel collar marked Hazard Devices, Oak Park, Illinois, Pat. 2557532. These factory markings firmly situate the lamp within the post-war American industrial landscape, a time defined by rigorous manufacturing standards and utilitarian clarity of design.
A wire-formed steel protective cage surrounds the bulb, engineered to prevent impact damage while maintaining full light output. Its subtly flared profile introduces a sculptural quality that elevates the lamp beyond pure utility. An articulated steel arm connects the lamp head to a powerful spring clamp, allowing secure attachment to shelves, desks, worktops, or bed frames, while enabling precise repositioning.
Original black Bakelite elements, including the inline switch and socket housing, remain intact and show only minimal, appropriate aging. Exposed hardware, mechanical joints, and visible fasteners underscore a design language driven entirely by function. Fitted with a contemporary mirrored E27 LED bulb, the lamp offers a discreet modern contrast while remaining fully practical for daily use.
Equally suited to a studio desk, bedside setting, or creative workspace, this lamp introduces an authentic industrial presence into domestic interiors. It stands as a rare example of American industrial lighting—honest, expressive, and preserved with exceptional integrity.
