About the Item

Pair Charles X Ormolu Candlesticks, France, 1825-1835, Attributed to Pierre-François Feuchère Workshop 11.5" high × 5" diameter A refined pair of French Charles X period ormolu candlesticks, richly cast in bronze and retaining their original mercury fire-gilding. The design combines strict neoclassical architecture with the romantic naturalism that defined the late Restoration era. Each candlestick stands on a circular base chased with anthemion leaves, palmettes, and acanthus motifs—hallmarks of Empire and Charles X ornament. The tall fluted shafts evoke classical columns, supporting urn-form candle cups elevated above exuberant fruit-and-flower wreaths, symbolizing prosperity and abundance. The casting quality, crisp chasing, and sculptural depth place these candlesticks within the top tier of early 19th-century Parisian bronze workshops. Their model relates closely to the production of leading bronziers working between the Empire and Louis-Philippe periods, including Claude Galle, Pierre-Philippe Thomire, and the atelier of Pierre-François Feuchère, who all employed similar classical columns, floral garlands, and naturalistic wreath surrounds. While unsigned, the quality and stylistic vocabulary strongly suggest a Paris origin. At 11.5 inches high, the pair offers strong vertical presence without overwhelming scale—ideal for mantle, console, or buffet display. An elegant and highly decorative ormolu pair from the heart of the Charles X period, with workshop quality that supports association to major French bronziers of the era.
