About the Item

A refined pair of original Art Deco candlesticks, produced in England circa the 1930s, combining hand-turned hardwood stems with layered brass and copper bases. The design is strongly architectural, featuring a spherical central knop supporting a tapered, truncated cone, a geometric vocabulary characteristic of early 20th-century Art Deco decorative arts. The wood—likely a warm-toned hardwood—retains a lightly lacquered finish that enhances the grain while allowing for natural variation. The bases are formed from stepped circular elements in brass and copper, now exhibiting attractive, patination, which contrasts elegantly with the polished timber above. This juxtaposition of natural and industrial materials reflects the modernist sensibilities of the period. Each candlestick measures approximately 16 cm high (6.3 in) with a base diameter of approximately 10 cm (3.9 in). Condition is good vintage, with some surface wear to the lacquered wood and expected oxidation and patina to the metal components, consistent with age and use. Some minor denting to the metal bases. Both pieces are structurally sound and present very well. A handsome and versatile pair, well suited to a mantel, sideboard, or dining table, and of clear appeal to collectors of English Art Deco objects and 1930s decorative arts.
