About the Item
A charming pair of antique wrought iron spiral candlesticks, dating to the 19th century. Each candlestick features a distinctive corkscrew stem with an adjustable candle holder, operated by a side peg that locks into the spiral grooves. This ingenious mechanism allowed the candle to be raised or lowered as it burned, ensuring the flame always remained at a practical height.
These are often referred to as “courting candlesticks” or “rat de cave” cellar candlesticks, traditionally used in rural Europe throughout the 19th century. The hooked tops are typical of the design, allowing them to be carried or hung when not in use.
The bases are crafted from wood, well-worn with age and wax drippings that speak to their long history of use. They have a wonderful time-worn patina, making them both decorative and authentic survivors of early domestic lighting.
