About the Item

Pair of French 19th Century Regence Style Candlesticks In chased and gilded bronze, the shaft of one depicting a faun riding a fantastic animal, the other one a woman with cupid, resting on a circular base with twisted fluting. A cornucopia emerges from each shaft, terminating in a candle holder. Ornamentation of heart motifs, pearls, flowers and bunches of grapes. After an 18th-century model by Corneille Van Cleve (1646-1732) Circa 1880 Camille Van Cleve came from a family of goldsmiths and studied sculpture with M. Anguier. His most famous works include Polyphemus with the nymph Galatea (1681), the Mercury figure from Versailles (1685/87), the Sleeping Ariadne (1688), and the large altar at Versailles. Literature: P. Hughes, The Wallace Collection, London 1996; II, pp. 232f. The Regence Style is an artistic transition between the Louis XIV and Louis XV styles. The charming and elegant Regence style gradually gives way to flowing lines that depart from the solemnity of the previous century. Architectural forms inspired by antiquity disappear in favor of curves and graceful shapes, such as those found in cabriole legs and facades or chair backs with a crossbow profile. The Regence Style blends the still heavy and rigid forms of the Louis XIV era with the touches of lightness characteristic of the Louis XV style. Ornamental designers abandon the warlike motifs and interpretations of clas-sical antiquity that symbolized order and rigor. They modify the Louis XIV style ornaments to make them more cheerful and joyful with masks, amiable faun heads, mascarons, and smiling female heads, called espagnolettes, some-times topped with a palmette diadem. As in the paintings of the artist Wat-teau, they draw inspiration from pastoral themes or the symbolism of love re-presented by the quiver, the dove, the knot, the seashell, or coral. In addition to the acanthus leaf, sculptors add motifs of intertwined bindweed, small branches, and stylized foliage in a cascading or fluted leaf pattern, re-placing the heavy volutes of the Louis XIV style.
