About the Item

Pair of Louis XV solid silver candlesticks, Mons (Bergen), circa 1760–1780 – Master’s mark with crowned shield Complete and coherent set of 18th-century hallmarks A superb pair of solid silver Louis XV candlesticks, crafted in Mons (Bergen, Austrian Netherlands) during the second half of the 18th century. Both pieces, perfectly matched, display an elegant baluster silhouette, a scrolling rocaille foot with turning lobes, and the soft flowing lines typical of the 1750–1780 rococo period. The silver shows a beautiful, even antique patina. Detailed hallmark analysis (Mons, before 1794) 1. City mark: Heart The official hallmark of Mons, used throughout the 18th century. 2. Maker’s mark: Small crown over shield Attributed to an unidentified silversmith active in Mons during the third quarter of the 18th century. Several local masters used crowned shield punches with indistinct initials. 3. Duty / Tax mark: Crowned oval punch A fiscal control mark used in the Austrian Netherlands before the French reforms. 4. Secondary control mark: “63” (or similar) in rococo cartouche A local numbering system typical of Mons silver in the late 18th century. The set of hallmarks is perfectly consistent and confirms production in Mons, circa 1760–1780. Dimensions Weight Height: 26 cm Total weight: 830 g Condition Very good overall condition: clear hallmarks, sound silver, no visible restoration, and light wear appropriate for 18th-century hand-crafted pieces.
