About the Item
Lovely pair of Victorian Period, sterling silver, Neoclassical-style, column-form candlesticks, Sheffield, England, year hallmarked for 1889, James Kebberling Bembridge (of Hawkesworth, Eyre and Co., Ltd.) - maker. Please note - The JKB maker's mark inside the maker's hallmark cartouche is that of J.K. Bembridge, who joined Hawkesworth, Eyre and Co., Ltd. as a boy and who was also Managing Director of the firm for 22 years at the time of his death in 1892 (See Volume I of The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths: 1838-1914 by John Culme, p. 222 under the Company name of Hawkesworth, Eyre and Co., Ltd.). Each candlestick measures 5 1/4 inches high x 3 inches deep (deepest point) x 3 inches wide (at widest point). The pair of candlesticks is weighted, and the underside of each candlestick is covered in green felt. The stepped-up borders of the square base of each candlestick are beaded in design. This beading motif is continued on the edge of each removable bobeche. The column of each candlestick is designed with swags of acorns that wrap around the columns. At the top of each column the acorns are surrounded by small leaves. There are a few minor dints on both candlesticks (commensurate with age and use) and the top edge of one candlestick, under its bobeche, is slightly out of round. (This imostly covered by its bobeche) - Please see photos. Dark areas on sterling silver in photos are reflections. Pair is in good antique condition.
