About the Item

A Brutalist candlestick from the Pitsi (“Lace”) series, designed in the late 1960s by Pentti Sarpaneva for the Finnish firm Turun Hopea Oy. Crafted from gilt bronze with intricate, perforated Brutalist detailing. Features a tulip-shaped base and a spherical candle holder at the top. Stamped with the Turun Hopea (TH) hallmark beneath the foot. Pentti Sarpaneva (1925-1978) was a Finnish jewelry designer. Originally trained as a graphic artist at the School of Fine Art and the School of Industrial Art in Helsinki, he turned to jewelry and metalwork design in the 1960s. He specialized in affordable pieces, working first with Kalevala Koru and later with Turun Hopea Oy. While some of his designs were cast in silver or gold, he preferred bronze, creating bold, minimalist forms often described as Brutalist. He was the brother of renowned glass designer Timo Sarpaneva, whose fame somewhat overshadowed his own.
