This set of four Variomaster modular candle holders was produced in the 1970s by Quist, a German manufacturer known for its bold interpretation of Brutalist design in small metal objects. Closely related in spirit to the well-known BMF Nagel system yet distinct in form and surface language, the Quist modules are defined by their textured, architectonic profiles, evoking cast-concrete reliefs or geological formations.
Each candle holder is cast in metal with a chrome-plated finish, displaying a deeply sculpted, almost crystalline surface pattern that captures light in sharp highlights and shadows. The triangular three-pod structure allows the holders to be stacked vertically or combined horizontally, creating sculptural arrangements ranging from minimal to dramatic. Their modularity encourages playful configuration, functioning not only as candle holders but also as Brutalist tabletop compositions.
This set of four pieces corresponds to the more sought-after Quist variation, stamped QUIST on the underside of all modules. They remain in good vintage condition, showing light wear, minor oxidation, and patina consistent with age and use — all characteristic of original 1970s examples.
