About the Item

A rare pair of Louis XV gilt bronze candlesticks signed P. Gouthiere. Richly adorned with a foliage relief design with a wide stem and cup shaped tops. Each marked: Fait parGouthiere, Doreur du Roy (gilder to the king), and dated 1769 on the base. Pierre Gouthiere was born at Bar-sur-Aube and went to Paris at an early age as the pupil of Martin Cour. During his brilliant career he executed a vast quantity of metal work of the utmost variety, the best of which was unsurpassed by any of his rivals in that great art period.
