About the Item

Sterling Corinthian Column Candlesticks Sheffield, 1899, Martin, Hall Co. A magnificent diminutive pair of late Victorian sterling silver candlesticks by Martin, Hall Co., Sheffield, 1899–1900, featuring Corinthian column designs with detailed rams' head mounts and ornate garland swags. This exceptional pair of Victorian sterling silver candlesticks was crafted by the renowned silversmiths Martin, Hall Co. Ltd. and assayed in Sheffield between 1899 and 1900. Known for their exquisite craftsmanship and refined designs, Martin, Hall Co. produced silver of exceptional quality, highly sought after by collectors. Each candlestick stands at 7 inches tall with a 3.5-inch square base and is weighted. The design features a Corinthian column shaft, meticulously detailed with acanthus leaf capitals—a hallmark of classical architecture. The bases are adorned with bold rams' head mounts, symbolizing strength and authority, connected by garland swags that add an elegant neoclassical touch. The use of Corinthian columns—symbolizing grandeur and sophistication—combined with the powerful imagery of rams' heads, makes this pair particularly striking and desirable. The hallmarks include the crown for Sheffield, the lion passant for sterling silver purity (92.5%), and the date letter corresponding to 1899–1900, confirming their late Victorian origin. The maker's mark for Martin, Hall Co. further attests to their superior craftsmanship and historical significance. Martin, Hall Co. Ltd was a leading British silversmith firm in the 19th century, celebrated for its exceptional designs and craftsmanship. Their works were featured in prominent exhibitions and remain highly collectible today. The Sheffield hallmark and date letter confirm these candlesticks as genuine Victorian-era masterpieces, reflecting the neoclassical revival that flourished in the decorative arts during this period.
