About the Item

A towering and beautiful pair of French giltwood candlesticks, with a lustrous golden color. Hand-carved in the 1700s, the statuesque candlesticks (45 inches tall) are supported by a sinuous tripartite base. Each foot consists of a curled acanthus leaf above a tightly wound volute. In between each foot is a palmette that graces the curvaceous sides. Similarly, the columns are full of undulations and protrusions in the form of rings of beading, gadroon lobes, and curled leaves. The saucer bobeche is adorned with beading above a flattened leaf cup and a rising pricket for a light bulb (although the electrification has been removed). Our tall pair of giltwood candlesticks can still be used as light sources, but most collectors tend to display them as beautiful decorative items on a mantel or sofa table.

    Repaired: Traces of old touch-ups as a result of losses to gilding. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Good antique condition. Commensurate losses to gilding, resulting in old touch-ups. Minor age separations. Light rubs and buildup. The candlesticks are no longer electrified. Some wear to the faux candle sleeves, which can be replaced.
