About the Item
This fine pair of four-light candelabra are English and made circa 1820. In the manner and style of the great English sliver and bronze craftsman Matthew Boulton, they are made from the finest materials to and to exacting standards. The Urn shaped Derbyshire fluorspar stone vases ( a stone found only in the county Castleton in Derbyshire and since vertually mined out) exhibit the purple and crystalline veining considered the best of the form. The pair rest also upon the dense deep black marble also from the same region. All the finely chased and cast ormolued bronze parts are created in the small scale nature of the master and are easily related to his output and show many of his design elements. Unusual to the style is the addition of the rock crystal pendants used throughout the pair. All the prisms and beads are carved from natural rock crystal adding light and sparkle. Matthew Boulton created at the end of the 18th century a modern manufactury designed by him and his partner John Fothergill to be a full-service firm in direct competition with the finest French bronzers. The factory in Birmingham and Soho produced silver, silver plate, buttons, shoe buckles, toys scientific instruments, gilded bronze, brass, and bath metal objects and was a wonder of the age visited by England's landed gentry as well as important visiting diplomates and nobles from all of Europe. He was constantly looking to grow his firm's position as a producer of luxury goods and even had sales in James Christie's salesrooms in 1771 and in 1778 to promote the firms' wares. Boulton traveled extensively to gather ornamentation ideas and kept in close contact with people such as Robert adam, Wedgewood
Bently the potters, as well as James Tassie who created Glass cameos in the ancient style. He also traveled throughout Europe and created commissions for the Empress Catherine of Russia, the King of Sweden and specifically for the English King and Queen creating a clock, a collection of vases to decorate a mantel in the Queens private rooms and a pair of large Candlelabra vases which still remain in the royal collection to this day. This pair of objects relate directly to Boulton's work in that he introduced to England the square candle arm terminating in acanthus leaves seen on this pair of candelabra which he took from French examples, The wreathed laurel borders at the base of the socle, and a favorite emblem within his design elements was the lyre which here has been used as the upper decorative section.
