19th Century French Empire Antique Bronze Mantel Clock by Caranda, Paris

About the Item

This gorgeous gilt and patinated bronze mantel clock is of simply outstanding quality. The case is surmounted by a seated cherub mercury gilded with a brilliant gold, clearly making him the strike point of the piece; his form is restive and relaxed as he braces himself with a single arm while readying to scoop something from the water with the shell in his other hand. His legs are slightly crossed on the naturalistic rocky base, a large flower flowing along the ground beside the mirror that makes up the pond. A pair of Corinthian columns raise the gilded pediment; these columns flank a circular porcelain dial with a Roman Numeral chapter ring and a pair of pierced hands, the dial surmounted by a carefully cast and chased gilt ring of repeating leafage and berries. A torch and quiver full of arrows are crossed beneath the dial, tied together in a flow of twisted ribbon. The whole clock rests over expertly cast gilded lion paw feet. The back of the clock is left open to expose the incredibly fine movement within - carefully pierced and etched, the movement reads "Caranda / Paris / No 142". It is of utmost quality, the tiniest parts formed with absolute precision - note the outer pallet of the movement is raised over tapered square Neoclassical columns with an angled midriff. A truly magnificent work, both in the quality of the case and precision of the movement, this is an absolute treasure. Measurements: 9 1/2" high x 5 5/8" wide x 3 3/4" deep Condition report: Dial with loss around both holes and old stress cracks to dial face. Minor loss of gilding and accompanying oxidization, notable on the toes. Normal discoloration to the brassy-tone of the case. No winding key. Movement has not been cleaned or checked for functionality.

ART DECO FIGURAL MANTEL CLOCK Anton Grath (Austrian, b. 1881) patinated and burnished bronze over marble signed "Anton Grath" and foundry marking monogrammed "HW" within an "H" to right side of base Circa 1925 Item # 203AXG01W A powerful figural clock of a partially nude male and female raising offerings of a laurel wreath and an empty vessel, they face one another before the bold architectural display of the clock flanked by coned finials. They are loosely symmetrical in garb, the burnished bronze capes flowing gently around and before them. The circular face of the clock rests on a pair of sleeping lions over a textured bronze rectangular plinth with a burnished bronze bas-relief of a young woman lying in the grasses of a setting sun raised on a variated marble base. This model was acquired formerly at the Sotheby's, New York sale on April 14th 2008, [Sale N08427, lot 155, achieved $ 5,000 USD] and the patina was enhanced at some point in the last fourteen years to include the parcel-burnished highlights in the figures.
