About the Item
An exquisite antique French Empire neoclassical gilt bronze figural clock signed by Jouquet a Paris.. This unusual clock is surmounted by a seated female figure in classical drapery, holding a cup in her right hand and a scroll in her left. At her side is a large eagle, positioned with wings slightly raised, its beak directed toward the figure’s arm. To her right is a tall ewer resting upon the stepped section of the case. The circular white enamel dial, with Roman numeral chapters and pierced gilt hands, is set within a beaded bezel. The case is raised on a rectangular plinth supported by rounded feet, with the front and sides richly decorated in relief, including mythological figures, winged lions, and classical motifs.
The dial is signed “Jouquet à Paris,” identifying the Parisian clockmaker. The gilt bronze case is mounted with elaborate ornamentation in the Empire style, featuring symmetrical arrangements of caduceus staffs, winged masks, and marine shells. The front frieze displays detailed reliefs of classical figures in motion, including a central scene with reclining and winged figures surrounded by foliage and marine imagery. These decorative elements are chased in high relief and arranged within architectural borders, creating a highly structured composition.
This clock was produced during the French Empire period, a time when bronze casemakers and horologists collaborated to create elaborate decorative timepieces for the elite. The use of mercury-gilded bronze was typical of Parisian production of the early 1800s, providing both durability and a lustrous finish. The Empire style, influenced by Roman and Greek antiquity, favored the integration of mythological figures, eagles, and symbols of authority, many of which are present in this design. The combination of Jouquet’s horological work and the elaborate bronze casing reflects the high standards of Parisian clockmaking of the period.
