A Unique Twin Fusee English Carriage Clock by James Moore French

A one of a kind english twin fusee carriage clock by James Moore French. The eight day movement has a large English jewelled level escapement with compensated bimetallic balance. The movement is wound and set through a round glazed door at the back and can be regulated from the outside as the fast/slow arm extends through the back of the case with rack striking the hour and half hour on blued steel gong with trip repeat. The gilt dial is signed as is th back plate of the movement, the centre of the dial is engraved with foliate scroll work with a roman chapter and breguet style moon hands. The unusual case of case bronze in a rococo revival style is finely chased with fluted sides flanked by Cariatids with a swag of fruit and flowers strung between them, th handle is formed of two dolphins. James Moore French was born in 1781 in County Antrim, Ireland. He was the son of Dr Hugh French and Sarah (née Arundel) French who married his father in 1763 and died in 1783, two years after James’s birth. In 1784, the year after Sarah’s death, Dr Hugh French married a widow named Judith Woodward who was to raise the young James French as her own, alongside his own and his half siblings. Its fully hallmarked with the sideways facing Lion for sterling silver, the ship Anchor for Birmingham, the date letter M for 1911, and lastly L&Co for Liberty and Co Between the years of 1899 and 1910 Archibald Knox was one of the principal designers for the London department store Liberty & Co. A fine antique Swiss silver gilt & guilloched enamel miniature carriage clock, retailed by Birks of Montreal, Circa 1910, just fully cleaned & overhaul by a professional clocksmith. The clock having a silver gilt case with guilloched enamel decoration, the rare & unusual decoration inspired by the architecture of the Alhambra and Moorish Spain, in the form of long mihrab shaped windows punctuated with circular white enameled 'jewels'. The base with a frieze of silver gilt spheres and the clock is raised on a striated agate base. The white enameled dial having black Arabic numerals & gold hands and is signed "Birks", for the famous Montreal retailer who sold luxury jewelery & timepieces. The clock having a seven day 15 jeweled lever mechanism, the clock is identical to others made for Cartier in Geneva and had been marked with "Birks" name as they were the retailers of this clock. The clock is stamped to the rear "Sterling" & "Argent" & 0.935, Geneva assay mark '935'. The clock was most likely designed by Maurice Coüet who designed clocks for both Cartier & The Geneva Clock Co. The clock is stamped with the "JTC" mark in a cartouche. An exceptional English fusee carriage clock timepeice by two of the nineteenth centuries greatest clock makers. The eight day single chain fusee movement with maintaining power and jewelled underslung English lever escapement, the back plate numbered 151. The movement is housed in a unique gilt case with unusual faceted feet and finials surmounted by a sprung cruciform finial. The case is undoubtedly the work of Thomas Cole the engraved panels depicting scenes from Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley novels, the figures contrasted with Cole’s unique horizontally lined background technique. The layered plate construction of the case with concave faceted columns is also typical the brothers’ period of collaboration. The silver engine turned dial with breguet style moon hands suggest the work of J.F. Cole as does the distinctive bridge on the back of the movement that gives extra strength to the mainspring and is documented in several other Cole clocks. We believe this clock is unique the finial and key are a distinctive cross shape, the finial is ingeniously sprung so that if knocked it will not snap but yield and spring back into place (see video).
