An attractive Hepplewhite cherry tall case clock by Asaph Whitcomb, Stow, Massachusetts, circa 1810-15. An attractive Grandfather clock is by Asaph Whitcomb, Stow, Massachusetts, circa 1810-15. Asaph Whitcomb was active as a clock and watchmaker from 1807-21 in Stow, Concord and Watertown, Mass, but this is the only known tall clock signed with his name. This finely proportioned grandfather clock has a wonderful regional case of richly grained cherry with vibrant inlays throughout. The case has both a high style form combined with more relaxed inlays that lend the clock a pleasant folk appeal. The hood has a distinctive regional fretwork mounted between reed inlaid chimneys. The dial, which was produced in Boston, is delicately signed in flowing cursive with the maker’s name and locale “A. Whitcomb, / Stow. The pendulum door and base panel each have cross banded and geometric inlaid borders with unusual “star point” corners. The lower panel features a central inlaid star the repeats the corner inlay.
