About the Item
A fine Edwardian inlaid mahogany longcase clock by Maples
Co., London, the finely proportioned case constructed from richly figured mahogany with satinwood crossbanding and marquetry inlays of classical urns, scrolling foliage, and floral motifs. The arched hood surmounted by a shell and lyre cresting, with fluted columns to the sides and a panel of anthemion inlay beneath.
The trunk door features a central marquetry panel of ribbon-tied flowers and scrolling husks within satinwood borders, flanked by gently curving sides. The base with a diamond-pattern inlay and raised on turned tapering legs.
The eight-day movement with anchor escapement, striking the hours on a bell. The brass dial with silvered chapter ring, Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, and matted centre, enclosed by gilt spandrels. Signed, Maple
