About the Item
This magnificent three-piece mantel clock garniture exemplifies the height of French Empire Revival design in the 19th century—where classical grandeur, refined materials, and superb craftsmanship converge to create a work of both artistry and precision.
The Clock (Centerpiece)
The clock stands as a figural masterpiece rooted in the Empire aesthetic. Its rectilinear case is crafted from deeply polished black Belgian marble (or slate), the dark surface setting a dramatic stage for the richly gilded bronze ornamentation.
Above, a patinated bronze figure of a seated muse—likely Clio, the Muse of History, or Urania, the Muse of Astronomy—rests elegantly beside a lyre, symbolizing art, knowledge, and harmony.
The frieze features remarkable ormolu embellishments, including medallions depicting the Arethusa head type, inspired by ancient Greek coinage from Syracuse, Sicily (circa 400 BC). The base is finished with bold scrolled tiger feet and a central lion’s mask mount, hallmarks of Empire design.
The movement, attributed to Japy Frères et Cie, reflects the celebrated precision and innovation of this distinguished 19th-century clockmaker. Bearing the Grande Médaille d’Honneur (Paris Exposition Universelle, 1855), it represents the firm’s highest standard of excellence.
The Garnitures (Pair of Tazzas)
Flanking the clock are two matching ormolu tazzas, each crafted with exquisite classical detail. The shallow, gilt bronze bowls feature scrolling acanthus-leaf handles and finely chased ornamentation of laurels and beading.
Each tazza rests on a tall, square pedestal of black Belgian marble, trimmed with a gilt “ray of heart” (rai de cœur) border—an elegant Neoclassical motif that complements the clock’s architectural form.
Historical Significance
This garniture set captures the opulent spirit of the French Empire Revival, balancing the austerity of black marble with the brilliance of ormolu. Traditionally displayed on a grand mantelpiece, such ensembles symbolized erudition, taste, and prosperity.
Bearing the mark of Japy Frères and personalized retailer details on the dial, this set stands as both a technical triumph of 19th-century horology and a sculptural expression of classical refinement—a true testament to the enduring elegance of the Empire style.
