A very fine 19th century French Louis XVI style Rouge marble and ormolu mantle clock by Raingo Frères, Paris. The circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals and Arabic outer minute track, finely cast gilt hands and signed; “Raingo Frères, Paris”. The twin-barrel movement striking on a bell, contained within an architectural rouge griotte marble case of elegant form, surmounted by a classical urn finial with beaded and fluted gilt mounts, the front adorned with gilt-bronze foliate scrollwork, fluted pilasters, and floral garlands. The stepped base with further ormolu mounts and rosettes, raised on gilt bronze toupee feet.

Raingo Frères
The clock-making company Raingo Frères built some of the most remarkable timepieces of the 19th century. Best known for its ornate mantel clocks, the company also masterfully crafted other works, such as candelabras and sculptures. Modeled on Renaissance, Byzantine and Empire styles, the company’s gilded garniture is some of the most recognizable artistic work of the 19th century. It displays the elaborate majesty prevalent in aristocratic and royal homes of the period.
Belgian watchmaker and metalworker Zacharie Raingo was the son of a watchmaker, and he took up the trade in his youth. He lived and worked in Belgium until 1813, when he relocated to Paris. During his time in Belgium, Raingo was inspired by Antide Janvier and developed his own planetary pendulum. In 1810, he patented an astronomical clock, a rotating spherical mechanism designed to emulate the behavior of celestial bodies.
In 1823, he founded Raingo Frères with his four sons, Adolphe, Charles, Denis and Dorsant. Established as both an industrial and commercial venture, the company quickly gained notoriety for its bronze work in addition to its fame as a clockmaker. It created works for an array of nobility and royalty, like the Duke of Chartres, King George V of England and Emperor Napoleon III of France, whose collection is now at the Louvre museum in Paris.
The company exhibited its works in the 1867, 1878 and 1889 World’s Fairs in Paris, winning numerous prizes, including a gold medal in 1889. Many museums and private collections boast works by Raingo Frères, including the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris and the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels.

A Fine
Most Impressive French Gilt, Patinated Bronze and White Marble Mantel Clock by Lepaute of Paris, France. Of impressive scale and refined Neoclassical design, the circular white enamel dial signed Lepaute à Paris within a gilt-bronze bezel surmounted by a finely cast and chased gilt bronze eagle with outspread wings perched on a laurel wreath. The clock flanked by two seated classical figures in dark patinated bronze, each reading from an open book, symbolising Knowledge and Wisdom. The central plinth panel finely cast with cherubs in relief, set upon a rectangular white marble base mounted with ormolu friezes of scrolling foliage and masks, raised on toupie feet.
The Lepaute family were among the most renowned horologists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, supplying timepieces to the French royal court and many important clients of the Empire period. The fine casting and crisp chasing of this example, combined with its balanced architectural design, exemplify the high quality of Parisian clockmaking of the period.

A stunning and very high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. ormolu and Rouge Griotte marble clock signed Raingo Frères. The clock is raised by two elegant rectangular reeded supports at the front and circular spiral fluted feet behind below striking richly chased elongated rosettes centering a fine pierced fitted intertwined laurel branch also repeated at the rounded sides. At the center is an impressive pierced fitted ormolu mount with Rinceau shaped scrolled acanthus leaves and berried laurel garlands flanked by striking fluted columns with fitted decorative ormolu chandelles and stunning lightly curved richly chased cornucopias with ribbons at each side. The enamel dial displays Roman numeral hour markings and Arabic numeral minute markings with elegant pierced foliate ormolu hands framed within an elegant mottled bezel with foliate and beaded designs. Above is the remarkable top crown a richly chased berried laurel wreath, a quiver, arrows, a bow and the eternal flame all tied with a flowing ribbon and displaying a wonderful satin and burnished finish. All original gilt throughout.
