About the Item

French Art Deco Mantel Clock Set in the Süe Mare Style by G. Limousin, France, circa 1918–1920. Exceptional French Art Deco mantel clock set attributed to sculptor G. Limousin, executed in the refined Süe Mare style, and produced in France between 1918 and 1920. This elegant three-piece garniture exemplifies the transition from late Belle Époque ornamentation to early geometric Art Deco design. The sculptural clock features a finely modeled classical female figure in spelter with bronze and brass detailing, mounted on a stepped veined marble base, flanked by a matching pair of urns. The composition reflects the decorative restraint and architectural balance characteristic of Louis Süe and André Mare, founders of La Compagnie des Arts Français. The clock is fitted with its original Parisian movement, recently professionally cleaned and fully functional. The dial is signed “E. Brondeau Limoges”, identifying the respected Limoges clockmaker E. Brondeau, while the metal base is signed “G. Limousin” and stamped “France.” The set retains its original key and pendulum. Materials Spelter, marble, bronze, and brass Measurements Clock: Height: 12 in. (30.5 cm) Width: 18.7 in. (47.5 cm) Depth: 7.1 in. (18 cm) Each urn: Height: 10.4 in. (26.5 cm) Diameter: 4.5 in. (11.5 cm) Condition Very fine antique condition. Minor edge nicks to the marble consistent with age. Excellent sculptural detail and patina. Biography – Sculptor G. Limousin Georges Limousin was an early 20th-century French sculptor active during the formative years of the Art Deco movement, particularly between the 1910s and 1920s. Working primarily in decorative sculpture for clocks, bronzes, and architectural objects, Limousin collaborated with French foundries and clockmakers to produce elegant sculptural works that bridged Neoclassicism and emerging modernism. His figures are distinguished by refined proportions, calm expressions, and balanced compositions, aligning closely with the decorative ideals promoted by Süe Mare and La Compagnie des Arts Français. Limousin’s signed works, often marked simply “G. Limousin”, are increasingly sought after by collectors of French Art Deco clocks and sculpture for their sculptural quality and historical significance.
