About the Item

A magnificent large gilded and patinated bronze period French Empire mantle clock depicting Urania the Greek Muse of Astronomy standing on a stepped rectangular gilded bronze base her left elbow resting on a large gilded globe of the heavens with a central band showing the signs of the zodiac. Her right arm reaches for a document on top of the gilded globe. The large white enamel dial features a bezel in the form of a snake biting his tail, a symbol of endless time. The dial is signed on the bottom Lesieur a Paris, who was one of the premier manufacturer of classical bronze statues of the French Empire period. The clock has it's original silk string suspension movement ringing the hours and half hours on a bell.
