About the Item

French Régence style gilt bronze clock garniture French, late 19th century Clock: Height 60cm, width 36cm, depth 20cm Candelabra: Height 67cm, width 25cm, depth 25cm This wonderfully ornate three-piece clock set is crafted from gilt bronze in the Régence style: that period of the early 18th century when the Baroque was losing its force and the nascent Rococo was beginning to flourish. This set evinces qualities from both styles: the massive, decoratively ornate forms of the Baroque and the curved, foliate forms of the Rococo. The mantel clock features a rectangular case set above a pierced base and surmounted by a roof-like pierced top. The dial, wrought from individual enamel cartouches inset into tooled gilt bronze, is centrally placed. The case is surmounted by an ornate urn-form finial, and is mounted to each side with exotic dragon-shaped handles. The pair of candelabra is similarly decorated, each featuring a stem formed as a vase and each supporting six scrolled branches.
